Sonar technology: a technological pioneer in underwater exploration

Sonar technology (‘Sound Navigation And Ranging’) is a high-tech means to detect, locate and identify underwater objects based on the propagation characteristics of sound waves in the water medium. According to the working principle, it can be divided into two categories, active sonar and passive sonar: active sonar detects targets by transmitting sound waves and capturing their echoes; passive sonar listens to the sound in the environment for detection.

This technology plays a pivotal role in many areas such as ocean exploration, underwater communications, navigation and guidance, and is particularly indispensable in tasks such as navigation, obstacle detection, communications and target identification for underwater robots and unmanned underwater vehicles.

Sonar technology: the most effective technical means of detection in water

Compared with the detection effectiveness of electromagnetic waves such as light, sonar technology is currently the most effective technical means of detection in the water, mainly due to the two main characteristics of sound wave propagation in the water: its direction is more concentrated than electromagnetic waves, and the attenuation in the water is much smaller than light and other electromagnetic waves.

Stronger direction:

Sound waves in the water medium almost along the straight line propagation, so that it has a higher accuracy in positioning and ranging, and light waves (belonging to the electromagnetic wave) by the water medium characteristics, refraction, scattering, etc. lead to its propagation in the underwater to produce a large deviation, so ultrasonic as the core of the underwater sonar technology in the water detection for positioning, ranging and other effects are better.

Weaker attenuation:

Unlike electromagnetic waves, such as light, which decay more quickly in liquids than in air, sound waves travel faster and decay more weakly in water. Sound waves travel about four times faster underwater than in air (about 1,500 m/s), and their attenuation is relatively weak, allowing them to travel long distances in water.

Since 1827 when scientists first accurately measured the speed of sound in water, human exploration and application of underwater sonar technology has undergone nearly two centuries of precipitation and development, and the application of this technology in the field of underwater detection has been quite mature.

AUDIOWELL Underwater Ultrasonic Sensor

Underwater ultrasonic sensor based on the principle of sonar technology, the use of sound wave propagation and reflection in the water, through the positive and negative piezoelectric effect and information processing for navigation and ranging technology. The product emits ultrasonic waves due to the inverse piezoelectric effect, which are received by the sensor after reflecting back from the obstacles encountered during propagation in the water, and the built-in circuitry digitally converts the received signals and calculates the distance to the obstacles through the MCU according to the TOF principle.

AUDIOWELL ultrasonic ultrasonic sensor can emit 1 MHz ultrasonic waves, measuring distance up to 8 meters away, to meet the swimming pool robot underwater operation of the cruise needs of obstacle avoidance, and can assist in the restoration of the full picture of the swimming pool underwater, to help robots intelligent upgrading.

Long Detection Range, Assisting in Map Planning

The underwater ultrasonic sensor can detect environmental conditions within an 8-meter range, sensing the pool walls through echoes to navigate the pool cleaning robot. Based on this sensory data, the robot calculates its relative position and orientation in the pool, determines its location, and plans a cleaning path.

Measurement blind spot as small as 6cm, effectively preventing brutal collision

AUDIOWELL's underwater ultrasonic Sensor has a measurement blind spot as small as 6cm, accurately detecting nearby objects, pool walls, steps, and obstacles. Sensors with digital communication capabilities can assist devices in decelerating in advance more quickly. Furthermore, sensors with small blind spots can provide the basis for the device to establish edge cleaning functions, ensuring thorough and efficient cleaning without omissions.

Low Power Consumption, Better Suited for Wireless Design

Wireless pool cleaning robots have become an industry trend. Creating wireless pool cleaning robots with strong battery life will be key to winning market competition. The underwater ultrasonic Sensor has low power consumption, does not affect the power needs of other components, and provides excellent conditions for enhancing the battery life of wireless pool cleaning robots.

IP68 Waterproof Rating, Suitable for Outdoor and Indoor Pools

The product has a waterproof rating of up to IP68, allowing it to work continuously underwater at a depth of 3 meters for 168 hours without failure. It has a wide operating temperature range, from 0.1 (non-freezing state) to 45°C, making it suitable for use in different environments such as outdoor and indoor pools.
